On Thursday November 29th, Emma and Carissa hosted a 3D Printing Ornament event for the sorority Kappa Alpha Theta. We had previously asked the participants what kind of ornament they’d be interested in making. We then found a template on Thingsverse for a swirly reindeer ornament.

At the beginning of the event, we told them how 3D printing works. We showed them different websites where they could potentially find templates for printing pretty much anything they could think of. We used TinkerCad to upload the template to. They had the chance to mess around with TinkerCad to see the different basic functions it could do briefly. We then showed them how to save the file as an .STL and then opened it up on the CURA application.

For the sake of time, we had to shrink the percent of the reindeer to only 70% of the original size so that it would only take 45 minutes to print. We then showed them how to upload the final file to the corresponding USB/ memory card to the printer then to put the file in the printer. Then we showed them how to use the printer by just inserting the file, scrolling to find the named file, then simply print! The girls were excited to see all the different objects in the room that were 3D printed and we answered all the questions they had about the class, things that we’ve 3D printed, and what they could potentially print if they wanted to. We also told them that the Makery in Carrier has 3D printers that anyone could use with assistants so that they could print something else if they wanted to. This event was very fun to host and we were excited to share our knowledge about 3D printing with the community.
