We chose to do a water bottle for our tinkered design project! It’s a very basic water bottle with a screw top lid. We just used a cylinder for the main structure and used a hole screw instead of solid screw. Then for the lid we used a solid screw on a smaller cylinder and added a ring to it. We made sure that the dimensions will fit when printed.

After that we used the scribble tool and text for the design on the exterior of the water bottle!

Our initial print didn’t turn out as we expected. The support needed for the screws is incredibly troublesome. The screws themselves did not turn out how they were supposed to — they were much thinner than they are in tinkercad. We just tested it with half of the design; the most important part– the screws on the body of the bottle and the lid. We debated creating a new item but were told to try printing it flipped 90 degrees instead and see how that works. The photos show what it looks like printed, with the crazy support thats impossible to remove and the thin screw holes that didn’t come out as expected. There’s also pictures of what it looks like in tinkercad.

After deciding that we needed to try printing it sideways before changing the design, we tested it out. It turned out much better than what we expected (for the lid at least). We printed it at 70% instead of 100% and the support didn’t mess up the handle on the lid of the water bottle as it did in the last one. The support also didn’t ~screw~ with the screws haha. The functionality of this thing can actually be possible now. The printer sorta melted the body part of the bottle when we tried to print it and didn’t generate the support necessary so it didn’t work out too well. We still have to play around with making the screws bigger and printing it with that.

Our final Water Bottle printed quite nicely, after figuring out that we needed to print each piece sideways for it to turn out best. The final modification that we made was changing the lid so that it was more durable for screwing in. Instead of using a scribble hook we went ahead and inserted an already made cylindrical donut from Tinkercad. (See both versions in photos below). We are happy with the final design.
