Design Idea

We decided to create a miniature model of Wilson Hall. Everyone that goes to JMU knows Wilson Hall and we thought that it would be a cool idea to create a small model that someone could have in their room. Our design meets the requirements for the project because you can’t find this in most stores. You might be able to find something similar to this in the bookstore, but we think that our design is something that someone would actually want to keep. Many different shapes were used to create the design. We use cubes, cylinders, paraboloids,  and holes in cubes and cylinders. There might be difficulties printing all the windows and the front columns.

First Draft Print

What we learned from this test print is that the windows were hard to print out and so was the roof. The roof isn’t 100% lined up with the columns in this print. There are definitely things that can be improved in our next print of the design.

Iterating the Design

We decide to make some changes to our design so that it would serve more of a function than just sitting on a desk. We decided to hollow out the inside and make Wilson Hall into a box that you can put stuff in. For this we separated the roof from the base of the building. Then we had to put a hole in the bottom part so that there would be room for people to put things in the box. Also for the lid to stay on the box, we need to add a lip to the bottom of the room so that the roof doesn’t fall off of the bottom of the building. We think this will be a better feature and elevate our design.
