Before taking this course, our group only had a basic understanding of the opioid crisis. We aware of the large risks of dependency and addiction, without having an understanding of the effects and the scale of the population affected. This course has introduced us to new perspectives, stories, and statistics about the Opioid Crisis that we would not have known otherwise. We had not considered the broad reach of this problem, which ranges from the pharmaceutical companies working to unnecessarily increase sales, to socioeconomic and geographical areas that are in particular susceptibility to this crisis, to a lack of research funding for alternative medicines. As a result, we chose healthcare workers as our target population, as they have the greatest potential to be an intervention point for educating the patients, while also providing additional care and support alongside the opioid prescriptions that patients may need. In order to create the scope of our problem, we created the problem statement, “We believe it would be game-changing if we could reduce the need for opioid prescriptions.”
