For starters, I had a bit of trouble starting to set up my ring design (I made the ring too small and too flat) so I asked for some tips on how to fix it. I went with a size 7 ring, hoping it would be able to fit my ring finger. On my second go around I was able to make the height of the ring correct, but the edges were a bit rough (I printed on the Ultimaker) and the ring itself wasn’t fitting my finger well, so I went with a size 9 ring, thinking that would give myself enough room. From there I decided to print of the LulzBot Mini, hoping to get a much smoother print and that’s exactly what happened. The size of the ring was perfect and fit my hand well. So I knew those were the dimensions I wanted for my ring.
Then the Meshmixer part was extremely difficult for me. I first tried to make some cool edits on my laptop, but with no mouse it was very tough to do, so I came into the lab on the weekend and was able to make it much more interesting. I wanted to put the letter “B” on my ring to represent the Boston Red Sox and the Boston Celtics, but for some reason the computer wasn’t taking the outline and putting it on the ring. From there, I decided to scratch that idea and make some indents and rough grooves on the outside of my ring to give it a better design. In my opinion, I really like how the ring came out and I was very surprised that the edits I made in Meshmixer printed so well on the LulzBot Mini. So I’m excited to see what Shapeways can do for my ring!!
*Update*
My Shapeways ring came in and it was exactly what I was looking for. I selected for the ring to be printed in the generic plastic option from Shapeways and the little details that the ring has is perfect. You can see on the ring the little indents and the parts that come out of the ring in between each indent. I’m definitely happy with what I came up with, but the details that the Shapeways printer was able to get looks great.
