For our Tinkercad project we decided to make a wall outlet protector. The idea is to make a box/cover for a wall outlet that will protect anything plugged into the outlet from external damages, such as furniture slamming into the plug or accidental pulling of the plug causing the wires to fray. The protector will have a door that pulls up for easy access to the outlet and will have an exit point at the bottom for the cords to go through. I know that i would always have wires get ruined by furniture hitting it when i lived in a dorm room. So this design will be very beneficial for fellow college students with the same issue.
Our orignial print consisted of a door that flipped up. However, we soon realized that the door was very unstable and needed to be redesigned to have more support. Also, another issue with the first print was that the box for the outlet was a little too small. It would fit onto the outlet, but the plastic would stretch and flare out on the bottom.
We ended up deciding that the door needed to be switched from a flip to a slide. So we came up with a design with a sliding door, changed the dimensions to better fit the wall outlet, and also made a cool design for the front of the cover.
The printing process was very basic and little to no support was needed because we turned them on their back to make it easier to print. Our final print was very successful but took a total of 15 hours for both pieces.
The dimensions of the print fit perfectly and the sliding door was very successful. We met all of the goals (sliding door, wires go through the bottom, and it protects from damage) that we had initially set. Our outlet protector is very practical, works very well, and it even has an awesome exterior design!
