The process of 3-D printing is used in many different ways, but arguably the most important is in the medical field.  Medical devices, prosthetics,  body tissues and very accurate models are just a few of the things medical professionals are printing.  Custom fit, cheap costing prosthetics are being able to be made for individuals who are missing fingers.  These prosthetics are very affordable and can be made every few years, which is great in the case of growing children who may need them replaced frequently. While organ transplants aren’t possible yet, smaller scale advances such as 3-D printing ears are being achieved.  The video below talks about the prosthetics for children and how ears are being 3-D printed.

An even more remarkable story is one in which 3-D printing was the only thing that saved a child’s life.  This video shows how a 3-D printed medical device was surgically implanted to allow the child to be able to breath.  The doctors in the video state there was no other option for the child, and this was the first time this procedure was performed.
