In honor of JMU we designed and printed a cube with the letters J, M, and U on three sides.  The scoop shared by the letters J and U make a nice slot for business cards:

The letters for this cube were modeled from the James Madison University athletic logo:

JMU_letter_mark_CMYK (1)

We used Adobe Illustrator to model the outlines of these letters and to change the “J” so that it would lean backwards and fit into the 3D design properly.  The modified letters were then extruded in Tinkercad, and each letter was grouped in various ways with other letters as “holes” to make the final design.  That makes it sound easy, but this model went through four different revisions, with each revision taking 1-2 hours of design time.

Printing the model is easy, however.  The angles are mild enough so that the model can be printed without any support material, which gives the model a very clean and sharp finish without any post-printing work (except for removing  raft material from the base).
