2017-2018 STC Members

SASKIA BEITZELL

STC President

Saskia Beitzell is a senior Media Arts and Design major with a concentration in Converged Media and a WRTC major with a concentration in Technical Communication from Williamsburg, Virginia. She is STC’s President this school year, and joined STC last year. Saskia is excited to lead and organize this year’s group meetings.

At JMU, she is also a member of Circle K International, a community service organization dedicated to making Harrisonburg a greater community. Saskia spent the past two summers as a JMU First Year Orientation Guide and enjoys talking about her experiences with new students. Fun fact: Saskia drives a manual transmission car. She enjoys building and creating websites. After graduation, Saskia is moving to Northern Virginia to pursue her dreams of creating and using innovative technologies.

CHRIS TRAMONTANA

STC Vice President

Christopher Tramontana is a junior WRTC major with a concentration in Technical Communication, and a Sports Communication minor from Howell, New Jersey. He is STC’s Vice President this school year, and joined STC as a POSITION in Fall/Spring YEAR. Christopher excited to sharpen his writing skills and strengthen his connections in STC. At JMU, Christopher is also a member of Club Racquetball and the JMU Honor Society. When he is not watching, playing, or writing about sports, Christopher practices his Photoshop, photography, and social media skills and other activities like riding his longboard and hiking. His passion for both sports and writing motivates him to one day achieve a career with ESPN or even with his favorite sports team, the New York Mets.

JACQUELINE BATTAGLIA

Treasurer

Jacqueline Battaglia is a senior Political Science major, and a WRTC minor from Avalon, New Jersey. She is STC’s Treasurer this school year, and it is her first year in this organization. Jacqueline believes STC is a great way to network and find people with similar interests. At JMU, Jacqueline is also a member of Zeta Tau Alpha. Jacqueline has two dachshunds named Ben and Beamer. After graduation, she will be interning on Capitol Hill this summer 2018, and will be applying to law school in the fall.

KARINA CALDERON

Secretary

Karina Calderon is a junior WRTC major and Film Studies minor from Richmond, Virginia. She is STC’s Secretary this school year, and it is her first year in this organization. Karina is looking forward to sharpening her communication skills and expanding her network in STC. At JMU, Karina is also a member of the Latino Student Alliance and works as Operations Assistant at the Student Success Center. Karina has a chihuahua named Max, and can recite a monologue from Macbeth. In the future, she plans to pursue a career in the film industry, specifically within production as a producer.

EMMA FRIEDMAN

EmDash Editor

Emma Friedman is a senior Media Arts and Design major with a concentration in Journalism, and WRTC minor from Silver Spring, Maryland. She is STC’s Public Relations Manager this school year, and joined STC as a normal participant Spring 2017. Emma loves being able to host professional development workshops for students, and assemble the EmDash publication in STC.

At JMU, Emma is also a member of Jewish Sorority Sigma Alpha Epsilon Pi, Art Honors Fraternity Kappa Pi, JMU student newscast Breeze TV and professional workshop series Future is Female. Emma enjoys hanging out with friends, Harry Potter trivia, and traveling abroad. Fun fact: Emma was quoted in USA Today during her participation in the March For Our Lives March 2018. After graduation, she plans to pursue a career in writing, editing or communication.

CELINA WICKHAM

Social Media Manager 

Celina Wickham is a junior WRTC major with a concentration in Technical Communication, and a Media Arts and Design major with a concentration in Journalism from Chesterfield, Virginia. She is STC’s Social Media Manager this school year, and it is her first year in this organization.

Celina is eager to continuously improve her writing and communication skills as well as establish connections with those of similar interests. At JMU, Celina is also a member of sorority Alpha Kappa Alpha and is a contributing writer for the Breeze. Outside of academics, she loves to express herself creatively through art, dance, and hula hooping. After graduation, she plans to pursue a career in magazine editing.

CECILIA VALDEZ

Web Designer

Cecilia Valdez is a senior Writing, Rhetoric, and Technical Communications major and a Computer Information Systems minor from Harrisonburg, VA. She is STC’s web designer and joined STC Fall 2017. At JMU, she was a mentor for the Valley Scholars. She is currently interning with Shenandoah Valley United, a soccer organization serving the Central Shenandoah Valley, and hopes to go into social media marketing or technical writing after graduation.

LAURA BAIRD

Web Designer

is a sophomore WRTC major with a concentration in Technical and Scientific Communication, and a Spanish minor from Powhatan, Virginia. She is STC’s Web Editor this school year, and it is her first year in this organization. Laura enjoys looks forward to a great year in STC. At JMU, she is also a member of Inter Varsity. Beyond academics, Laura enjoys hobbies such as music, photography, and astronomy. In the future, she hopes to work in web design or in archiving.
