Feminism in Morocco After the Arab Spring and the Artist’s Agenda

Tara Ott

This essay will situate the artist’s work in the larger context of a women’s movement or feminist efforts in contemporary Morocco, especially in the years since the Spring of 2011, the period referred to as the ‘Arab Spring.’  Although Morocco did not experience a revolution as a result of the Arab Spring, the events of the Arab Spring ushered in significant governmental reforms that have profoundly affected the lives of Moroccan women.  Lalla Essaydi’s past and current feminist efforts must be seen in the context of gender politics in Morocco to fully appreciate her work in its fullest dimensions.
