The Truban Archives at the Shenandoah County Library and the New Market Area Library are accepting applications for a single intern to assist with managing our digital and physical collections. We currently have open positions for the fall of 2017, spring of 2018 (minimum of 100 hours of service) and for the summer of 2018 (minimum of 200 hours of service). The selected individual will receive a stipend equal to $1000 for each 100 hours served, up to $2000. All work would be completed at the Shenandoah County Library in Edinburg Virginia.

This Internship would focus on creating content related to New Market Virginia for our Shenandoah Stories historic structure website (shenandoahstroies.org). Assignments related to this include scanning, researching historic sites, drafting and editing site descriptions, and entering and editing metadata in our digital asset management system.

In addition, our intern would be expected, on a limited basis, to assist with other projects at the Truban Archives including:

-Processing archival collections

-Developing exhibits for the archives and partner museums

-Assisting researchers in our reading room

-Conducting research projects for ongoing archival activities

-Planning and performing educational programming for local groups and schools

-Creating social media posts, blog entries, and other online content

All of these activities will be completed in conjunction with archives staff and volunteers. While we expect interns to be able to perform all of these tasks as needed, we will allow individual to focus on projects that match their interests. Our intern will gain additional insight into the site’s decision making process and will be invited to attend meetings of the library staff and the Shenandoah County History Council.

We invite any student currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate history program at an accredited college or university is invited to apply. Individuals with a public history background or education are preferred.

Prospective applicants will have to undergo an interview, either in person or via phone, with library staff before being selected.
