Alright, we finally have a thanksgiving break!! But, before that, we need to share some news about SCOM for last two weeks.

Dr. Corey Hickerson was named the recipient of the 2014-2015 JMU College of Arts and Letters Carl Harter Distinguished Teacher Award.

IABC officers

IABC recently elected their new officers for the 2013-2014 school year! Congratulations to the following:

JMU Debate Team

 

The JMU Debate Team won the novice champions of the App State debate tournament.

Speech Team

The JMU Speech Team travelled to South Orange, NJ to compete against teams from Binghamton Univ., Univ. of Pennsylvania, Seton Hall University, West Chester University among others.  It was another strong weekend for our team.  Individual results are as follows:

Day One:
  • Shelby Akins 2nd After Dinner Speaking, 3rd Informative Speaking, 5th Prose Interpretation
  • Jessie Bur 1st Extemporaneous Speaking, 2nd Impromptu Speaking, 2nd Informative Speaking, 3rd Poetry Interpretation, 2nd Overall Speaker
  • Abby Fiege1st After Dinner Speaking
  • Zachary Healy 2nd Communication Analysis, 2nd Duo Interpretation
  • Katie Lese 1st Communication Analysis, 1st Dramatic Interpretation, 2nd Duo Interpretation

2nd Overall Team.

 
Lee Mayfield was also recognized with the “Ed Leonard Spirit Award,” which recognizes individuals promoting the community within the forensic competition.
 
Day Two Results:

 

  • Shelby Akins 1st Informative Speaking, 6th After Dinner Speaking
  • Jessie Bur 6th Informative Speaking, 1st Extemporaneous Speaking,
  • Abby Fiege 4th Poetry Interpretation
  • Zach Healy 2nd Duo Interpretation, 4th Communication Analysis
  • Katie Lese 2nd Duo Interpretation, 1st Communication Analysis

 

With these individual results Jessie Bur is now qualified for the National Individual Events Tournament in both Impromptu Speaking and Extemporaneous Speaking and Katie Lese is qualified in Communication Analysis and Dramatic Interpretation–bringing the total number of qualifications for the team up to thirteen.
 
The team, coached by Lee Mayfield and Alyssa Reid will travel this coming weekend to West Chester, PA to compete in the Charity Ball–a tournament designed to help raise money for the individual teams favorite charities.

  • Many professors are presenting in D.C. at an annual National Communication Association conference. More information can be found at the school website. Also, Chelsea Legendre will live tweet the event in D.C. on Friday and Saturday. Please stay tuned.
