3-D Printing will impact everything in some way. One major implication that comes to mind is that more goods will be manufactured at or close to their point of purchase. This local production could have good and bad effects to the economy and manufacturing industry overall. Even if the production cost is higher it will still be more inexpensive in the long run due to reduced shipping costs. This creates excitement for consumers and dismay for some manufacturers overseas especially for items such as automobiles that need specific parts. These items can be made locally and much more cheaply for consumers in the future which may change the game for lots of businesses. The supply chain management may be eliminated eventually since there won’t be a need any longer. Going beyond car parts, even cars themselves are being produced using 3D printing!
3D Printing Impact is changing the market since consumers ultimately will be able to make the majority of things on their own, completely customized to their needs. This is perhaps the most incredible difference in this technology as opposed to others. People will be able to revolutionize industries that they never thought possible. Cody Wilson is doing just that through the use of 3D Printing in the weapons/defense industry.
“Wilson is a 25-year-old University of Texas law student working to build semiautomatic weapons using 3D printers. His name first came up in conversation with a colleague after Wilson posted an Indiegogo pitch video demonstrating his intended use for a newly-acquired Stratasys 3D printer, which Stratasys subsequently repossessed.”
Cody Wilson has sparked quite the conversation in both government and science alike. Projects such as these effect people all over the country especially with the legality of weapons such as these.
Whatever your thoughts on gun control, it’s impossible to deny that the 3D-printed gun movement is something that doesn’t fit into the current legal framework.
3D Printing will continue to impact the world and the availability of goods to consumers. With more locally produced goods, the outsourcing of manufacturing to other countries such as China, will decrease, allowing for more jobs in the United States. The Technology/ Manufacturing industries will be hit hard with change and revolutionized, hopefully for the better.
