This semester there are five of us in this class who are part of JMU’s University Program Board (UPB). We all hold leadership positions that requires us to spend a significant amount of our team in the office each week so we often spend time designing and learning each program together in the office. Over the first month or so a lot of members saw what we were working on and showed an interest in learning about 3D printing. They were surprised that JMU has a lab and offers a course so they wanted to learn more. Jennifer Zackoff and I decided to create our own outreach event for members of UPB to come learn how the lab works and watch 3D printing happen. We started out by showing the participants a few of the programs we learned how to use (Tinkercad and 123d Design) and the basic skills. A UPB keychain already designed in Tinkercad that they were able to download and print as we instructed them on what to do. The printers were turned off and we went over some basic safety precautions and a brief overview on how the printers work. We demonstrated how to initialize the printer, load the STL file into Afinia, how to scale the file correctly and what each of the settings mean when printing. While the keychains printed, we showed them Thingiverse and let them explore the kinds of things people have designed. They also got a chance to look at the numerous items laying around the classroom. The members who attended were really fascinated with how everything worked and were really interested in learning more about design and what we can do with 3D printing. For those of them who will not be graduating are definitely planning on taking this class in upcoming semesters now that they know about the lab and the course that is offered. IMG_2349
