The video below explores the various concerns behind 3-d printed guns. As of now, 3-D printed guns require a piece of metal to be attached to the gun so it cannot bypass metal detectors. However the gun itself and the bullets it uses contain either no metal or not enough metal to set of a detector. This can cause serious problems for sporting events, political events, and the like.

A current situation in California is over the “Senate Bill 808”. This bill, if passed, would make it a crime to manufacture a 3D printed gun without obtaining California Department of Justice approval. If approved, the gun would need to be printed with a serial number given by the justice department. The bill was passed through the Senate and is now in Governor Jerry Brown’s hands to sign the bill into a law of California or to veto it.

There are also guns that use metal and resemble a traditionally manufactured gun. This poses problems in the area of gun registration. While some states require a registration period of 3 or so days before a registered gun can actually be obtained, this technology allows the user to circumvent the regulation. A 3-D printing owner, perhaps nowadays or in the future, will have the ability to print a lethal, metal weapon in a matter of hours and it will be unregistered by the government, essentially, not existing.
