Aidan Williams is a Senior Integrated Science and Technology (ISAT) major involved in a 3D printing class at JMU. He spared me the time to answer a few questions about his first creation.
Williams, who’s always wanted a pair of brass knuckles, created some out of 3D printing filament after designing them in TinkerCAD. When asked about how he created his design, Williams said he created it using only spherical shapes.
“I began with a very basic outline consisting of the four finger holes connected to a big cylinder. I then went back and made holes using the cylinder tool until I got the shape I was looking for,” said Williams. “My first size was slightly too small for my fingers to fit so I scaled it up by 110% and it came out perfectly.”
Williams felt the design was fairly easy to create, but as it was his first model in the class it took some time for him to get acquainted with the software and printer.
Luckily he hasn’t had to put them to use yet, but Williams said he’s “just waiting for someone to try [him].” Check out his print in the picture below.
