3D Printing has numerous applications to all fields. One example of this is its application to the medical industry, in that people are now able to take 3D scans of X-rays or MRI’s and print out replicas of the bone structure. One project we had this semester allowed us to use this new technology, and Bailey Good did exactly that. She used OsiriX software in order to scan the pelvis and spine of her roommate who recently had surgery. You can see the scanned CT scan and printed version of her project below.
You can see that the rib cage wasn’t able to print out, and that’s because it was too thin of material to print while only using minimal support. When I asked her about the final design she stated; “This was one of my favorite projects of the year! Although it gave me some trouble when attempting to print out the ribs, I was able to remove them from the final design so that it would print with maximum detail.” You can tell the level of detail in the print, it truly is astonishing!
This project really shows the vast applications of 3D printing, as it can take any type of image or medical scan and turn it into a very detailed, 3D printed replica!
