Description:
This course will allow architecture majors to become familiar with the architecture design and gain more hands on practice with miniature models. The course will ultimately prepare students with many scaling techniques, problem solving issues, and design methods/software. At the end of this course, the student shall be able to know how to work the three types of 3D printers available, know at least three different types of design software to create ideas (Tinkercad, Inkscape, and/or Illustrator), and be able to create a final scaled down version of a building they create.
Objectives:
By having an interior architecture class morphed with a 3D printing class, students wanting to pursue a degree in architecture will be able to get hands on experience of building to scale models of buildings and other architecture. Students would be able to complete course objectives such as;
– Learning how to set up software and printers
-Learn how to design their own architecture
-Learn the nature of PLA/ABS material
-Work with scaling of buildings
-Work with a limited amount of colors
-Learn to persevere thru obstacles within the class (software problems, printer issues..)
– Learn great time management skills

Why architecture?
Even though I am not an architecture major or any thing close to an architecture major I realize that in order to get good at design, building, and scaling, hands on practice is the best way to get good. 3d printing is now being called “the future of production” because it is able to quickly build models and products with little cost. By having a required 3D printing class for architect majors, it will allow the future architects to get more hands on practice. Also, by making this class an introductory class, it will allow the students that aren’t sure about whether architecture is their thing or not. If they get into the printing class and realize they hate designing, fixing, and building things, then maybe architecture isn’t right for them.
Architects all over the world have been using 3D printing as ways to practice building smaller models.
