Summary: The lynching of Bruce Younger, a black man, occurred on July 27th, 1888, in Halifax, South Boston County, as he was accused of assaulting a married white woman.

Bruce Younger allegedly entered Mrs. Robert Dodd’s house, near Meadville, through a window while Mrs. Dodd was asleep. Younger was captured and taken before a justice of the peace, who sent him to the jail at the Halifax Courthouse. A party of indignant men took Younger from the courthouse jail on the night of July 27th, 1888 and hanged him to a tree (Washington Critic).
