The American Civil War has made several names famous, one name that is not famous but still played a significant role is Henry Wirz. Wirz was known primarily for two things, being a Confederate Captain in charge of the Andersonville prison and being executed for war crimes committed at the prison. Over the last 153 years since the trial of Henry Wirz, historians and judges have debated about the trial and trying to figure out if it was the right verdict or if it was a national disgrace. Henry Wirz’s trial and execution can be viewed not only as unlawful to Wirz but as a punishment to the Confederacy by using him as a scapegoat.
