Throughout his presidency, particularly in the events surrounding the infamous Nullification Crisis, Andrew Jackson vastly expanded the powers of the executive branch. His consistent use of the veto, more than any other president before him, and flippant disobedience to the Supreme Court decision has gained him many detractors over the years. But, in doing so he was able to move quickly and decisively when bodies such as the slow-moving Senate could not. Because of Jackson’s swift action and manipulation of the system he was able to stave off John C. Calhoun and the nullifiers, thus preserving the union for almost thirty more years.
