Beginning in 1954, the United States attempted to limit the spread of communism in Vietnam through military action for over twenty years. By the early 1960’s, economic support and advising for the South Vietnamese turned into United States troops on the ground. The United States military faced a number of successes and losses, but faired decently until the 1968 Tet Offensive. In the years up to and during the Tet Offensive, changing media perspective shaped the American public’s view on the conflict, undermining the war effort and ultimately spelling the end of American involvement in Vietnam, as well as the Johnson administration.
