In the 1960’s police were conducting raids on the LGBTQ bars around Greenwich Village on the notion that they did not have liquor licenses. On June 28th, 1969 there was a routine raid conducted on the Stonewall Inn. Over the next three days mass riots between the LGBTQ community + allies and the policed commenced. After they were dispersed and the violence ended, the question remained of ‘Why Stonewall’? This event was important for the voices that had been silenced for so long and the recognition for the needed rights of the LGBTQ community in the United States.
