The memory of the American Civil War is one of two sides forming up into neat lines and advancing towards each other, but the reality is much different. Starting in late 1863, the war started to move towards a war of trenches and foxholes that would come to be familiar with wars of the 20th century. The regiments that had not seen this change were those belonging to the Heavy Artillery, who desired to prove their worth in battle. They would do these tactics throughout 1864, even conducting a charge just as deadly as the Charge of the British Light Brigade during the Crimean War.
