Carlisle Indian Industrial School located in Carlisle, Pennsylvania was the first federally funded Indian boarding school.  There, thousands of Native American children would embark on an educational journey that would have a lasting impact on American history. Indian students of Carlisle received a formal education, prompting them to understand, read, write and speak the English language. In addition to learning English, the students received a vocational education, worked summer internships and participated in extracurricular activities such as sport and music This school was the vision of Army general Richard Henry Pratt and his goal to provide students the skills to be economically independent and integrate them into American culture.
