Today we took a bus ride deep out into the maintains and valley regions of Priorat! One of the main wine producing regions in Spain, with many historical sights and wineries that date back to medieval times and are still functioning! Our first stop was a winery higher up in the mountains called Cellar Cooperatiu in Falset! This winery is protected by the law, as Cataluña funded its restoration, but because of that, the people working there cannot make any new additions or changes to the building, it must remain in its original form! Here we toured the inside of the cellar first and then went onto the roof of the building and saw some of the red wine the ferments up there for a year, called the rancid wine that is very sharp in taste. Afterwards we went into the tasting room and tried about 5 wines, both red and white! We also tried a vermouth and the rancid wine, neither of which were for me personally but some of the more avid wine drinkers in the group enjoyed their strong flavors! We then got on a bus and drove down into the valley. The views were absolutely amazing! We could see all of the valleys in between the mountains for miles! We were able to stop at a scenic point and take some photos that turned out awesome! We then toured another really historic site called La Morera de Montsant, which was home to some Manosaries and very holy ground over 1,000 years ago. We were able to see the gardens and the quarters in which the members of the Manosaries would stay! It was deep in the valley so we could look up and see mountains surrounding us, along with all of the ancient arches and buildings that were held very sacred to the region. A few miles down the street was the winery the Morera de Montsant used to make their wine! We had a delicious lunch, which for me consisted of pasta stuffed with spinach and cheese, cod with vegetables, and an almond ice cream popular in Cataluña! After lunch we headed to taste a few more wines, I ended up buying a white and red to bring home for my family to try! We headed home and then a group of students went and got some snacks on the rambla right by the sea before heading home to have dinner with our families! Each day here I feel like we discover something new and see different beautiful places! I feel very lucky to be able to learn in this place with these people and can’t wait to start clinical this week!
