Today, we had Spanish class, learned about Spain’s healthcare system, and toured the Joan XXIII hospital.
In the morning, the beginner and advanced level Spanish classes participated in a number of activities to improve and refresh their Spanish.
A speaker then came in and gave a lecture about Spain and Cataluña’s healthcare system. Spain in general has free and universal healthcare (that is paid for through taxes) and focuses on prevention which is very efficient and beneficial to the community. They focus on their problems at hand and implement 5 year programs to fix them before they become detrimental to society. Their primary care plays an important role in their healthcare system and patients only visit the hospital in an emergency (this is somewhat different than the U.S. system).
The Joan XXIII hospital tour was very informative and interesting. This hospital is public and is where most of the people in Tarragona go for healthcare services. There are a number of different floors and buildings that make up the hospital, including rehabilitation, maternity and women’s health, ITU, emergency unit, and many more.
In the late afternoon, a few of us visited a restaurant to relax and have tapas. This all in all was a very fun and productive day in Tarragona!
¡Adiós!
