Today was the first day we took classes at the University. The Spanish professors were very welcoming and excited to have us there. We met the professors in charge of clinical assignments and the professors in charge of Spanish classes. I was placed in a lower level class with most of the group. We did an introduction to determine all of our skill levels. We also learned what clinical we would be involved in. I got placed in the maternity ward of Hospital Universitari de Tarragona Joan XXIII. It was really exciting to take Spanish classes at the University because they were more interactive than any Spanish class in the United States. We had lunch in their cafeteria, which was awesome because it was really good food for super cheap. I had pollo and arroz! We also got the chance to sign up for Spanish-speaking partners. This was a great opportunity because we get to teach the students English while they teach us Spanish. Then, we went to the shopping mall el corte inglés in the main part of the city. A lot of us didn’t have sweaters that were warm enough, so we decided to look around the mall! It was interesting to see the difference in clothing style here in Spain. They wear a lot of leather in Spain! The Spanish H&M actually had merchandise with the American flag on it. The mall had escalators that were flat. They were so weird! We went to the beach to buy ice cream to celebrate my birthday. The beach we went to was a lot smaller than the one on the end of la Rambla. However, it has a lot more sand and multiple restaurants right on the beach. We got pizza on the beach!! Finally, Andrea and I made our way to the supermarket close to our host family. We wanted to see how different it was from American supermarkets and we didn’t really have anything planned to buy. We thought it was so funny that they had ham flavored Pringles!
