JMU has an estimated 9,000 trees on campus, not including the Edith J. Carrier Arboretum. To facilitate management of campus trees in ways that optimize the provisioning of ecosystem services and other benefits, it’s important to know “what we have”. This often means conducting a complete inventory of all the trees on campus. To-date, research with graduate and undergraduate students have resulted in partial tree inventories for the JMU campus. A “walking tour” of campus was also completed, which takes readers on a meandering path around campus whilst learning about trees (see here). Data generated from the inventory has been used to model the ecosystem services of campus using the Forest Service’s i-Tree tools. We’ve partnered and shared data with JMU’s Facilities Management and the City of Harrisonburg Parks and Recreation Department.
