We are planning to develop an outreach summer research program series at MAL!

*** tentative timeline: summer of 2026 (pilot program) ***

Using the MAL facilities – electron linear accelerator and X-ray imager – high school students and their teachers will work with MAL scientists and undergraduate physics students to prepare a research proposal, design an experiment, set up the experiment, gather and analyze data, make conclusions, and prepare a final poster.

  • This program will be designed to enhance Honors or Advance Placement STEM classes. Ideal candidates for this program are teachers who are willing to facilitate the research process with their students, and will use this program to enhance their current curriculum
  • During the summer, teachers will attend a FREE workshop to:
    • gain understanding about MAL and its capabilities;
    • gets ideas for possible projects and research questions;
    • meet MAL scientists and physics undergraduates in the program;
    • learn the MAL user application process;
    • learn the logistics of taking a field trip to MAL.
  • During the program, teachers and high school students will:
    • design and conduct their own research with the guidance of teachers and scientists and undergraduate physics students;
    • use the linac and X-ray imager at MAL;
    • encounter an authentic experience that may extend to multiple years.
