The changes in the regulations that occurred at Madison College in the 1970s gave future students more freedoms in their social lives. The arrival of men on the campus of Madison College sparked rapid change in the social regulations of students. Dating policies are now nonexistent, as are curfews. Students are no longer required to account for their whereabouts, or companions upon returning to their dorms. The dorm hours put in place in the late 1970s are still in place in the current student handbook. The 1970s shifted the responsibility of decorum from the college and the parents onto the students themselves. The abolition of the dating rules did not signal an opportunity for students to be promiscuous, but instead a chance for them to prove they were adults and could handle fewer rules responsibly. The James Madison University expects that students uphold the honor of the school in their general behavior both on and off campus.
