Charles Harris Award of Distinction
The Charles Harris Award of Distinction recognizes JMU faculty members who have proved to be outstanding partners with JMU Libraries in teaching with technologies at JMU. Recipients of this award:
- Exhibit and model the values, qualities, skills and practices that underlie the work of JMU Libraries
- Have made a demonstrated contribution to JMU Libraries and JMU
- Have demonstrated exemplary use of instructional technologies in teaching
All JMU full-time and part-time faculty nominated for an Excellence in Teaching & Learning with Technologies Award are eligible for the Charles Harris Award of Distinction.

- A recognition trophy
- A modest cash stipend
2018
Karina Kline-Gabel, College of Arts and Letters
This year’s Charles Harris Award of Distinction is presented to an individual whose achievements include developing video lectures and course tours for her students, leading workshops on Instructor Presence in Online Teaching, and offering course design tips for faculty peers. A strong supporter of JMU Libraries, Karina has served as a faculty associate with Innovation Services and modeled teaching and learning with technology for her peers and her students over the years at JMU.

This year’s Charles Harris Award of Distinction is awarded to a group of faculty who have worked together over the years at JMU to champion Innovation Services in formal and informal settings. These faculty present on technology in the classroom at regional, national, and international conferences, and mentor other faculty designing and teaching online and blended courses. The group has produced scholarship on Learning Management Systems, Digital Literacy at JMU, and is interested in student’s digital career preparedness.

Tassie Pippert
Hart School of Hospitality, Sport and Recreation Management
Over the course of her time at JMU, Tassie Pippert has championed instructional technologies. Pippert teaches students to incorporate technology into their projects, from blogging, to videos, to e-portfolios and websites, and she designs and teaches blended and online courses. She regularly leads technology brown bags and training sessions for her Hart School colleagues and has facilitated Innovation Services workshops.

Barbara Reisner
Chemistry and Biochemistry
Barbara Reisner is a Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry. Reisner is an early adopter who has worked for seven years with CIT and is constantly improving how she teaches with technology. She received this award because she exhibited and modeled the values, qualities, skills and practices that underlie the work of The Center for Instructional Technology.

Charles Harris
Psychology
Dr. Charles Harris, a longtime Professor of Psychology at JMU, was awarded the first Charles Harris Award of Distinction for his extraordinary contributions to the evolution of instructional technology. The award was created by JMU’s Center for Instructional Technology to honor Dr. Harris and, in the future, other individuals who exhibit and model the values, qualities, skills and practices that underlie the work we do day after day, year after year.
