Signet Ring: Fusion 360

For my final project I decided once again to design a piece of jewelry: in this case, it’s a black diamond signet ring.

It was by far the most difficult project I’ve tackled so far, and the reason for that is because I did it mostly in form mode (specifically the “sharp display”) to push, pinch, and pull my model into the shape of the ring.

In sharp mode, there are no curves, only flat planes, and this helps to demonstrate where all the vertices and edges of a model are as you edit. However, when you convert the model back to its normal display mode (and you have to do this to finalize any model in Fusion) errors can occur when the program tries to convert your blocky model back into a smooth shape. So, it took a lot of effort to make the final base shape you see below.

Once I had this shape, creating the gem and its setting was easy; all it required was extruding a circle and an inscribed octagon. To make the incisions for the filigree, I sketched some shapes using the rectangle and line tools and cut away at the ring’s surface. The designs themselves were simply sketched and extruded.
