Layli Tulaganova

I am a sophomore Psychology major working towards an (unofficial) English minor. My academic and creative interests relevant to the topics covered in this class include the following: immediacy, which is the basis for my video essay, and hypermediacy; apparatus theory; docile bodies/viewers; and cultural geography and place. The appeal to me is mainly in that I can apply these to myself more readily than other topics, as well as see my life in a new way.

Aaron Lee

I am a Junior Media Arts and Design major with a concentration in Digital Video and Cinema. I also am minoring in Film Studies and Sport Communication here at JMU. My interest in video editing and virtual reality is what drew me to taking this course. Some extracurricular activities I am involved with at JMU include playing for the club baseball team and working as a sports videographer for BreezeTV.

Charles Holmes

Charles is a senior Biology major with dual concentrations in Microbiology and Ecology/Environmental Biology in addition to a minor in English. Their main interest in cinema is to understand the relationship between the externally-qualified and internally-defined individual and the art object, as well as the revolutionary potential of subversive arts. Beginning this July, Charles will pursue a Ph.D. in Oceanography at Texas A&M University.

Sean Paige

Sean is a Junior pursuing a degree in Media Arts and Design, concentrating in Digital Video and Cinema. He is also minoring in Film Studies to further his passion for film-making. During his free time, Sean can be found over-analyzing TV Shows and trying not to crash his drone into a lake.

John Young

Hello! My name is Jack Young, I am part of the JMU class of 2019, and I’m pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree in Writing, Rhetoric and Technical Communication with a minor in Film Studies. This semester in my Film and Media Theory class, I’ve had the amazing opportunity to fully produce and edit a 360° Virtual Reality short film essay, which I’ve titled, “Pilot.” Inspired by the Red Bull extreme snowboarding film, The Art of Flight, I created Pilot to explore Andre Bazin’s notion of “the total cinema” in the context of understanding what it means for VR technology to be entering mainstream entertainment while uncovering the subversive advertising power of hyperreal films. Please enjoy the immersive VR experience!
