February 12, 2025. Robert Clark was an African American that was lynched in Bristol in 1891, accused of assaulting a white woman. While Clark was previously thought to have been killed on the Tennessee side of Bristol, recent research by the Bristol Community Remembrance Project revealed that instead he was taken from the jail and then hanged on the Virginia side of the town. I am grateful to Tina McDaniel for sharing her research and primary sources about this lynching, that is now included in the lynching dataset and map. The number of documented lynching victims in Virginia between 1865 and 1932 is now being updated to 117.
