Victims

For each identified victim, we provide a brief summary of the alleged events leading to that lynching, as well as of what was reported to have occurred in the aftermath of the killing. Please keep in mind that to reconstruct these events, the resources available are predominantly white newspapers and sometimes official documents, with all their biases and often inflammatory accusations. Whenever possible, black newspapers are used as well, but often these are not available. These summaries are not intended to be the definitive accounts of what happened, but mostly to encourage further research by scholars and local communities. This dataset provides a list of confirmed lynching victims, as well as a list of people who had been erroneously identified as lynching victims in past inventories.
