GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The Dukes lacrosse team faced a tough loss against the Florida Gators this past Saturday afternoon in Gainesville, Florida with a final score of 15-7. This is JMU lacrosse’s first American Athletic Conference (AAC) defeat of the season.
The first two quarters were neck and neck, resulting in a tie of 4-4 at halftime. No. 9 Florida took the lead over no. 14 James Madison after the half which prompted their success for the rest of the game.
JMU had a total of 19 shots on goal. Senior Isabella Peterson led the team by scoring four out of the seven goals against the Gators. Sophomore Maddie Epke, senior Katelyn Morgan and freshman Emily Simkin each contributed one goal. Epke and Morgan also had one assist each.
On the defensive side, the Dukes had a total of nine ground balls. Sophomore goalkeeper Caitlin Boden had a career-high of three ground balls in addition to her 13 saves in goal. Senior Lizzy Pirisino scooped up two ground balls and freshman Maddie Weybrecht had one. Pirisino and Weybrecht each caused two turnovers.
Six players of the Florida Gators had two goals. Danielle Pavinelli guided the offense with two goals and three assists. Maggi Hall led the Gators’ overall game with two goals, two assists, five ground balls and she caused a turnover.
The Dukes (10-4) will look to reclaim their winning streak this Saturday, April 20th against another AAC competitor, Vanderbilt (8-6). This is the final home game of the 2024 season.
