Harrisonburg, VA: On Tuesday, March 26th the James Madison Dukes (JMU) took an early lead in the third inning and carried that momentum to clutch the win against the Radford Highlanders, 12-2, at Veteran Memorial Park in a game that ended in the sixth inning due to strong downpours.
No points were scored until the top of the third inning. Freshmen Kyle Langley initiated these points towards the offensive surge with a walk, which would be his first of three in the game. The Dukes excelled on four consistent hits, continuing with Langley, following junior Jason Schiavone crossing the plate off a double hit by Wyatt Peifer. Two more runs with singles from sophomore Mike Mancini and juniors Fenwick Trimble and Coleman Calabrese. The singles extended the Dukes lead to 5-0.
Maintaining their momentum, Langley had another outstanding walk in the fourth inning, exceeding the score on Wyatt Peifer’s career first 411-foot home run. The bases became loaded, and three more runs through a hit by pitch and two walks advanced the Dukes’ lead to 10-0.
Four more walks to kick off the fifth inning would allow a run to score. If that wasn’t exciting enough, a sacrifice fly from Coleman Calabrese added another run, yet again giving the Dukes a clear advantage with a score of 12-0.
After a stellar performance from the JMU baseball team, the adrenaline would soon come to a halt when rain came pouring down in the sixth inning. Despite the Radford Highlanders managing to score a pair of runs, the inclement weather forced the game to be called, sealing James Madison’s victory with a final recorded score of 12-2.
