BALTIMORE, Md. – Over the weekend James Madison’s lacrosse faced a tough challenge on the road in Baltimore against Johns Hopkins, ultimately falling short with a score of 21-13 on Saturday. Despite notable efforts from senior Isabella Peterson and redshirt junior Olivia Mattis, who both secured hat tricks, James Madison couldn’t overcome a halftime deficit.
The Dukes saw contributions from various players, with a total of five different goal scorers and four players registering assists. Notably, redshirt junior Maggie Clark stood out with three assists, while senior Katelyn Morgan provided two.
Defensively, Clark also showcased her strength, securing a game-high six ground balls, alongside senior Lizzy Pirisino and freshman Ava Bleckley who tallied three each. Peterson and sophomore midfielder Lauren Savage contributed with turnovers. Sophomore Caitlin Boden in goal made 14 saves on 47 shots faced but couldn’t halt Johns Hopkins’ scoring onslaught.
On the opposing side, Johns Hopkins had a balanced scoring effort, with four players recording hat tricks. Ava Angello led the charge with six goals. Bailey Cheetham stood out with five assists, while goalkeeper Madison Doucette made 12 saves. The Dukes were outdrawn significantly, with Johns Hopkins dominating possession, collecting 23 draws compared to James Madison’s 13.
During the post game press conference, head coach, Shelley Klaes has an optimistic outlook following the Dukes loss.
“There wasn’t a lot we could have changed. We dedicated ourselves to thorough preparation and executed our strategies effectively. The team is hoping to bounce back and regain momentum as we head back home on Wednesday to take on Richmond.”
In summary, Johns Hopkins secured a convincing victory, trimming James Madison’s lead in the all-time series and highlighting areas for improvement for the Dukes in upcoming matches. This is the Dukes third loss of the season with now holding a record of 8-3.
