CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The JMU Dukes (7-2) fell short to UVA’s Cavaliers (9-1) in a close battle on the road, getting outscored 12-8. James Madison (No. 6) out-drew Virginia (No. 9) 14-9, and collected more ground balls, however it was no match against the defensive performance from the Hoo’s goalkeeper Mel Josephson.
James Madison’s put up an impressive offense, which was led by senior attacker Isabella Peterson who secured her eighth hat trick of the season. Redshirt-junior attacker Olivia Mattis also helped add to the team total, finding the net twice in the outing. Senior attack Katelyn Morgan helped to move the ball around, recording 2 assists and Peterson once again adding another. Putting up a strong defensive fight, senior defender Lizzy Pirisino recorded a team-high four turnovers. 5 Dukes each caused a turnover of their own, and 6 others each secured two ground balls. JMU’S net was well guarded from goalkeeper Caitlin Boden who saved seven on nineteen shots faced.
The Dukes’ defense was no match for the Cavaliers, who’s offense was led by Jenna Dinardo and Morgan Schwab. Dinardo recorded 5 goals of her own, and Schwab with 1 goal and 3 assists in the matchup. One the defensive side, Mackenzie Hoag led with 3 ground balls and two caused turnovers. Goalkeeper Melissa Josephson made 11 saves on 11 shots faced, only allowing eight goals in the Hoos’ victory.
In the post-game conference, JMU Head Coach Shelley Klaes reflected on the tough competition faced tonight and the overall performance shown from her Dukes.
“You know tonight was a tough battle back and forth all night. We knew coming into this matchup that we were facing a strong opponent and that this wasn’t going to be an easy game. I am extremely proud of the effort shown from our players tonight and give credit to our opponents for the performance they put on tonight. There is a lot we need to work on and practice to best be prepared for our next matchup this weekend.”
The loss brought the Dukes’ record to 8-2
JMU will be on the road again this Saturday and will look to defeat the University of Cincinnati Bearcats on their home turf.
