CHARLESTON, S.C. The Charleston Cadets fell in its season opener to the Salt Lake City River Otters, 129.34-106.20 last Sunday. Have a score here. Despite the loss, tight end Travis Kelce and quarterback Lamar Jackson starred on the field for the Cadets and the rest of the team are a work in progress.

The Otters quarterback, Jalen Hurts, threw for 264 yards and 3 touchdowns (46.76 points). He led a balanced attack, with running back Christian McCaffrey gaining 187 combined rushing/receiving yards (27.7 points), wide receiver CeeDee Lamb with 104 receiving yards (25.6 points) and TE T.J. Hockenson 97 receiving yards (25.7 points). Kelce had 2 touchdowns and 76 receiving yards (25.6 points) for the Cadets in the loss.

When Head Coach John Harbaugh was asked for his analysis of the game he said “Very happy with the team’s effort, toughness, and resiliency… Those are the kinds of things that make us who we are as a team. We just didn’t close out the game when we had opportunities.”

Despite the team’s loss, Jackson put up a commendable front, having completed 19-of-30 passes for 235 yards and one score.  He also ran 12 times for 86 yards, but had lost two fumbles. Jackson was still angry about his two turnovers during the postgame news conference, and took to social media afterwards to express more frustration: “That ticked me off.  I hate any type of turnover,” Jackson said, “Two hands on the football.”

“It was an alright game, though,” added Jackson, “We just gotta get better, start scoring more points. Gotta get better for next week.”

The Cadets are set to take on the Honolulu Chameleons (1-0) next week. Kickoff will take place at the Honolulu Chameleons stadium at 7 p.m. ET this Sunday. Fans can tune-in on NBC or radio station 98.9 FM.
