Baltimore, Md. – This past Saturday No. 10 John Hopkins defeated No. 9 James Madison University at home with a final score of 21-13. The Dukes fall to 8-3 on the season and John Hopkins move up in the rankings advancing to 9-3.
Despite the stellar performances from senior Isabella Peterson and redshirt junior Olivia Mattis who both had hat tricks, it wasn’t enough to secure the win. Peterson and Mattis weren’t alone in the goal scoring, five other JMU players had goals and four players recorded assists. Maggie Clark, the redshirt junior had three assists and senior Katelyn Morgan had two.
On the defensive side, Clark secured a game-high six ground balls along with senior Lizzy Pirisino and freshman Ava Bleckley both having three. To go along with their ground balls, Clark and Pirisino each caused two turnovers as well as Peterson and sophomore Lauren Savage each causing one. Sophomore Caitlin Boden posted a .400 save percentage saving 14 shots on 47 faced, allowing 21 goals.
John Hopkins had four players record hat tricks, compared to JMU’s two. Ava Angello recorded six goals and four goals each from Maeve Barker and Campbell Case. Bailey Cheetham had five assists along with seven other players recording at least one in the game. John Hopkins outdrew the Dukes by a margin of 23-13. Jennifer Barry collected 13 of John Hopkins 23 draw controls, while sophomore Maddie Epke collected six and Peterson collected four.
Defensively, John Hopkins was led by Jordan Carr with five ground balls and Cheetham who had three ground balls as well as three caused turnovers. Goalkeeper Madison Doucette had a .480 save percentage with 12 saves on 30 shots faced only allowing 13 goals.
The Dukes look for redemption against their next matchup against the Richmond Spiders in Richmond, VA. The Spiders are 9-2 on the season and with home field advantage will put up quite a fight against the No. 9 ranked JMU Dukes. The game will take place on Wednesday at 6 pm at Robins Stadium.
