TORONTO, Canada — The Boise Spuds jumped out to an early lead against the Toronto Snowtigers, but after a last-minute comeback, fell 117.70 – 111.20.
“We had a strong lead throughout the game,” Boise head coach Will Moran said. “The Snowtigers just ended up being the better team.”
After trailing the game 103.3 – 85 heading into Monday night, the Snowtigers’ running back, Austin Ekeler, had a clutch performance with 24.30 points to win the game for the Snowtigers. Ekeler scored the only touchdown of the night, and had 83 total yards. Four other players finished the game in double digits, including quarterback Jalen Hurts, who finished with 20.90 points and two touchdowns. Running back Saquon Barkley had 18.50 points after rushing for 83 yards, and scoring a touchdown.
Spuds’ quarterback Lamar Jackson had his lowest scoring performance of the season, only accumulating 16.10 points. Coach Moran says the team needs to focus their attention on other key players.
“Our team relies on one person every week to hold down the fort,” Moran said. “This can’t become our identity. If we want to win, everyone has to perform.”
Despite Jackson’s performance, wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk racked up 28.30 points with two touchdowns. Wide receiver Justin Jefferson was the second highest scorer for the Spuds in week 6 with 17.70 points. Jefferson had 6 catches for 107 yards.
The Spuds defense severely underperformed, only getting 2 points.
“The game isn’t only won on offense,” Boise defender Javon Kinlaw said. “We need to leave it all out there every game.”
Following the loss, the Spuds fall to 3-3, while the Snowtigers remain undefeated heading into week 7. The Spuds will take on the 0-6 Oklahoma City Oxen, with a projected score to win, 106.67 – 92.79.
