AUSTIN, Texas — Despite scoring over 130 points for the second straight week, the Boise Spuds couldn’t overcome every Austin Roadrunner player scoring double-digit points, dropping its Week 3 matchup, 153.22-131.22.
“Austin got out ahead early, and we simply couldn’t keep up,” Boise head coach Will Moran said. “To be honest, if we score 130 consistently, I feel good about our chances this season to win it all. Just couldn’t contain them this week.”
The Roadrunners got ahead by over 50 points early in the 1 p.m. window of games and never looked back. Austin running back Derrick Henry looked like his old self for the first time this season, racking up 143 total yards and a rushing touchdown — 25.3 points. Henry was accompanied by stellar performances from his backfield mate, Cordarrelle Patterson, 23.3 points, and the defense, which totaled 18 points.
Quarterback Lamar Jackson once again exploded for Boise, tearing up the Roadrunners for 47.42 after a 60-plus-point performance in Week 2. However, despite Jackson’s dazzle, Moran said more Spuds need to step up.
“Our squad’s becoming very Lamar-dependent right now,” Moran said. “He knows that. The whole team knows that. It’s just a matter of stepping up to the plate across the board.”
Another bright spot in Boise’s losing effort was wide receiver Marquise Brown. After what he called an “underachieving” Week 2, Brown stepped back up in a big way, en route to 140 receiving yards on 14 catches.
Outside of a 14.5-point output from Spuds running back Ezekiel Elliot, no other offensive starter logged more than 5.8 points.
“It’s abysmal,” Boise wide receiver Justin Jefferson said. “I know I need to step.”
With the loss, the Spuds drop to 1-2, while the Roadrunners improve to 2-1. The Spuds in Week 4 play the 2-1 Orlando Crocodiles, which are projected to win, 119.53-117.25.
