HONOLULU — The Charleston Crabs picked up its first win of the season Sunday, beating the Honolulu Hammerheads 118.56-102.54 on the road.
Tight end Mark Andrews and wide receiver Russell Gage had stellar performances for the Crabs, earning 28.90 and 23.70 points respectively. Andrews finished with 89 yards and two touchdowns while Gage added 87 yards and a touchdown.
Quarterback Matthew Stafford added another 21.16 points behind 249 pass yards and two rushing touchdowns for Charleston.
The game was neck-and-neck until the fourth quarter. Then, with a combined effort from Stafford and Gage, Charleston pulled ahead to pick up the win. Wide receiver Terry McLaurin and tight end Travis Kelce were the top performers for the Hammerheads, finishing with about 18 points each.
Andrews said in the post-game press conference that he was proud of his team’s effort to get the job done on the road.
“I think that today really told us a lot about what we need to do from here on out. I think that everyone came in ready to play and do their part to end this losing streak. We have to take all of the positives today and shift it to next week because we have a good test against Toronto.”
The Crabs improved to 1-2 with the win. Charleston stays on the road next week as it takes on the Toronto SnowTigers. Kickoff is at 1 p.m. at Rogers Centre.
