HONOLULU, Hawaii – The Honolulu Chameleons (4-1) thwart the San Diego Sealions (1-4) at the Sony Stadium on the final play of week five to secure a win in what could be the game of the season.
The Chameleons were down 35 points heading into the game on Monday night and needed a superhuman performance from wide receiver Marquise Brown and boy did he deliver in spectacular fashion. After forcing the game into overtime, Brown caught the go-ahead touchdown, securing the narrow five-point win for the Chameleons.
Not only did Brown have a stellar week with 35.50 points, but the whole wide receiver core for the Chameleons showed out with a combined 40.90 for WR’s CeeDee Lamb and Justin Jefferson as well. The performances from the Chameleons’ WR’s were just enough to outdo Sealions’ quarterback Justin Herbert who scored a monster 56.82 points after throwing for four TD’s and scrambling for another one on the ground.
A solid team performance, excluding tight end T.J. Hockenson and kicker Matt Prater who had off-weeks with only a combined 8.70 points, is what secured the Chameleons the victory.
In the post-game press conference, head coach Randall Smith had high praise for the team’s fighting spirit.
“What a game. This team’s resilience is second to none and is what has distinguished us from everyone else so far this season. I have to give credit to Marquise Brown who did not stop fighting until the final whistle, players like him will help us be successful this season.”
The win brought the Chameleons’ record to 4-1.
Honolulu will look to continue their winning ways next week as they travel to Bridgeforth Stadium to take on the Harrisonburg Blue Streaks (2-3).
