Omaha Steaks fall to Portland Cobras in lopsided contest
OMAHA, Neb. Even behind a strong performance from quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, the Omaha Steaks couldn’t pull out the win in week five, falling 164.46-86.14.
Garoppolo gave the Steaks every chance to win the game, bringing in a strong 24.94 points off 181 passing yards and two touchdowns
Among the rest of the roster, players struggled to get going against the Portland Cobras. Wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins was able to bounce back from a rough week four and provide strength on the offensive attack. Hopkins hauled in 88 receiving yards, but couldn’t find the end zone in week five.
“Disappointed,” Hopkins said. “Obviously, we go out and win during week four and we want to follow that up with another one, but couldn’t do it. I need to do more for my team to help them win.”
For the Cobras, quarterback Matt Ryan went off. The quarterback threw for 330 yards, three touchdowns and only one interception against the Steaks. Ryan paired with wide receiver Tyler Boyd who recorded 123 receiving yards and a touchdown were too much for the Steaks’ defense to handle.
Garoppolo and his team are eager to get back in action next week, looking for their second win of the season.
“Obviously, losing isn’t fun — that’s not what we’re here to do,” Garoppolo said. “I came here to win and so did my teammates. The fans expect us to win, but we’re not doing that right now, so we need to improve. It’s on to next week, and hopefully we’ll do better.
With the loss, Omaha falls to 1-4 on the season with hopes to turn things around next week. The Steaks will be back in action against Lincoln Logs, looking to knock of the top team in the league, which currently sits with a perfect 5-0 record.
