The Purple Cobras Suffer Second Loss to the Serpents in Week Four

SALT LAKE CITY – The Portland Purple Cobras had a tough week four matchup at Amazon field Sunday night, falling 169.44-115.70 to the Salt Lake City Serpents. The Purple Cobras had a strong showing from quarterback Matt Ryan and running back Todd Gurley tallying 32.68 and 26.00 points this week. However, the Serpents dominated with impressive turnouts from their offense combining 167.44 points versus the Purple Cobras 101.7 points.

The Purple Cobras had a strong performance from quarterback Matt Ryan who now is averaging a phenomenal 331.3 passing yards per game. His impressive 397 passing yards assisted the Purple Cobras since quarterback Josh Allen suffered a helmet-to-helmet hit during the game. Due to the injury, he was removed during the contest only scoring 5.72 points. Despite Ryan’s performance, the Serpent’s quarterback Philip Rivers surpassed the Purple Cobras with 38.40 points.

“Sunday’s game was a tough one,” said Ryan. “The Serpent’s brought a strong offense and played very well. We just need to continue working hard so we are prepared for our next game.”

During Sunday’s matchup, the Serpents dominated in the running game. Running back Leonard Fournette led the way carrying the ball 29 times for 225 yards and earning 28.50 points, as well as wide receiver Cooper Kupp. The number two wide receiver in the league, Kupp, dominated scoring 27.90 points and now ties the team lead at 15 for targets.

Despite a strong showing from the Serpents, Gurley carried the ball five times for 16 yards and scored two touchdowns. His solid performance puts him leading the Purple Cobras running backs with the most points this week.

“After the past few games, we need to improve our execution,” said head coach Mike Johnson. “We are continuing to play physical and tough, but we need to focus on being better with our technique. If we continue to work hard and make corrections, we will succeed.”

The Portland Purple Cobras (1-3) will be back in action Sunday at 1 p.m. as they take on the Omaha Steaks (1-3) at Nike Stadium.
