The Lightning Organize a Local Toy Drive During the Holiday Season
OKLAHOMA CITY, O. K. – To give back to its local community the Oklahoma City Lightning are organizing a holiday toy drive at the community center. The event will run from Dec. 7 to Dec. 20, 2018 and local community members are highly encouraged to contribute. The goal is to donate 5,000 toys to local residents and low-income families who do not have the means to buy holiday gifts this year.
Collection boxes for donations are located in the front hallway at each high school in Oklahoma City, and gifts will be accepted during regular business hours.
“I grew up in a small town where most families were below the poverty line, so I know what it’s like to not be able to afford gifts for holidays,” said Patrick Mahomes, the quarterback for the Lightning. “If we can help more families in the area be able to provide toys for their children or enjoy their holiday season then that’s the real win,” Mahomes said.
The Lightning believe in the importance of giving back to the community that supports them on and off the field. The team wants to make the community a better place by raising awareness for the families in need and provide a memorable holiday season. The team has hosted various other events to serve the community through annual food drives and fundraisers with Love Without Borders.
