SAN DIEGO, Cal. – The San Diego Jackrabbits plan to debut their new homeless shelter on September 15, the weekend of their first regular season home game.
The organization is partnering with Habitat for Humanity to transform foreclosed buildings into functional shelters for those in need. These new renovations will consist of beds, bathrooms with showers, a play area for children, and a cafeteria for optimal benefit to the community. As this process will begin in March, Jackrabbits’ players and coaches will be assisting with this effort throughout the off season.
Fans can sign-up to volunteer or donate money to stock the shelter through the Jackrabbits website. They will receive shirts and have the opportunity to receive autographs from the team.
In August, the organization also asks that fans bring bedding items, toiletries, or canned goods to preseason games in exchange for a concession stand item or t-shirt.
The organization recently announced the #JackrabbitsTackleHomelessness campaign to fight the epidemic plaguing their city.
According to the General Manager, “The ultimate goal is to raise awareness for an issue many seem to overlook or assume they can’t assist. Our homeless citizens matter and it is our responsibility to spread that message to everyone.”
Aside from building the shelter, there will be a series of other events held during National Hunger and Homeless Awareness week in November. For more information on those events, visit www.sandiegojackrabbits.com/homelessness.
